As you all know, this is a well recognized exam from Cambridge University. It is an upper-intermediate level qualification that corresponds to a B2 level in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Why take FCE and not any other exam?
If you are looking for an exam to certify your level in English but you do not want it for a specific purpose (e.g. applying for a specific university in a foreign country, etc), FCE is for you! It is accepted in many countries, both in universities and in companies.
Which is the structure of the exam?
The exam is divided in several papers: Reading & Use of English (75 minutes), Writing (80 minutes), Listening (40 minutes) and Speaking (14 minutes) and it is usually taken in two different days: the first one for Reading & Use of English, Writing and Listening, with pauses in between, and the second one for Speaking.
How can I prepare for it?
It is really advisable to prepare for the exam. It is not enough to have the required English level, you also have to know the structure of the exam, the exercises that you can find in it and the tips to get a good score.
There is a lot of material available to practice, some of it you can access for free (take a look at some of the examples we have written at the bottom) but our advice is that you attend a course specifically designed for FCE preparation. There is a huge difference when preparing on your own and when having a professional and experienced teacher guiding your learning and practice. In these classes you will get to know the exam, have all the grammar explained, take real papers and get the best advices and tips for a successful result.
How do I know if I am ready to take the exam?
As an independent user, you will be required to:
- Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.
- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
- Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
