Confusing words: Trip vs. Travel

Do you ever confuse the words «trip» and «travel»?

Quick explanation:

  • Travel = verb
  • Trip = noun

A: Have you travelled lately? (verb)

B: Yes I have. This summer I took a trip to London. (noun)

Definitions:

  • To travel – the act of travelling
  • Trip – a specific visit to a certain destiation (countable noun)

Examples:

  • I love travelling!
  • We should take a trip to the beach. The weather is going to be great this weekend!

We can see in Example 2 that trip is actually a countable noun, using «a» before it!

Bad: I have to do a travel to Peru. Good: I have to take a trip to Peru.
